Infant mortality is one of India’s most persistent health concerns. Breastfeeding is known to reduce child mortality, and has numerous health benefits which extends into adulthood.

Breast milk is the best nutritional food source for infants and should be available to all babies. In honour of World Breastfeeding Week CCDT’s Sahyog project supported by PLAN International (India Chapter) organised a poster exhibition for the tribal communities living in Padas of Sanjay Gandhi National Park, and Aarey Colony in Goregaon.

Poster Exhibition

Breastfeeding is considered as the foundation of life. To increase awareness in the padas, a poster exhibition was organised to spread awareness and allow individuals to interact. It’s an interactive form of communication that enables people to ask about their doubts, and gain knowledge from the session. The pictorial form of communication helps them understand the nuances and importance of breastfeeding techniques.

According to WHO, breastfeeding is also a newborn’s first vaccine, providing vital antibodies and an immunity boost.

The Sahyog team explained to the community people how breastfeeding should be administered during the first six months of the child’s life. Breastfeeding should be continued till the age of two to ensure healthy growth, and development of the child apart from reducing the rate of child mortality. The team also informed them about the complementary feeding supplements as it is vital for women to be sensitized first.

The team explained that producing breast milk require a good amount of energy. To build and keep up a healthy milk supply, new mothers must fuel their body with well-balanced meals and healthy snacks.

Interacting with Community People

“Breastmilk is the golden drops that in every way are a gift from a mom to the baby for their healthier future!” During the session, the Sahyog team explained how breastfeeding helps in forming a special bond between a mother and a child.
