Restoring a Wholesome Childhood

CCDT’s Residential Care Program (RCP) restores a safe and wholesome childhood to orphaned and vulnerable children in crisis. It offers health and nutritional care, psychosocial support, education, recreation, family values, and life skills-ensuring children grow in a nurturing environment until they turn 18 or are reintegrated with their families.

RCP currently runs two centres: Ashray in Bandra for children aged 2–12, and Ankur-Asmita in Badlapur for adolescent girls aged 13–18. These homes support children affected by HIV, missing or orphaned children, those with unfit parents, or rescued from abuse and exploitation.

Acting as a safety net, RCP prevents abuse, neglect, and discrimination while preparing children for reintegration or independent living. It empowers them to overcome crises and build brighter, confident futures.

Tia is a bright young girl who enjoys reading, writing stories, and playing both indoor and outdoor games. She is regular in class, completes her homework diligently, and actively participates in creative activities like craft and toran making. Her confidence on stage and love for dance reflect her lively spirit.

Behind her cheerful demeanour, however, lies a story of pain and resilience. Tia has faced both mental and physical trauma that deeply affected her emotional well-being. In the beginning, she found it difficult to express herself during counselling sessions. With time and trust, she opened up about her experiences, often through tears, revealing the depth of her distress. The counsellor identified her emotional challenges and worked closely with her to provide guidance, build coping skills, and help her develop a positive outlook.

Her situation was further complicated by limited family support. Her grandmother, who worked as a maid, struggled to care for her in an environment where early marriage was common for young girls. To ensure her safety and holistic development, the Child Welfare Committee placed Tia at CCDT’s Ankur Asmita Centre, a residential care home for children in need of care and protection.

At Ankur, Tia found the structure, affection, and encouragement she needed. The care team and counsellor helped her regain confidence, participate in creative and educational activities, and strengthen her emotional well-being. Over time, she became more expressive, self-assured, and hopeful about her future.

Tia’s journey reflects the power of compassionate care and counselling in transforming young lives. With continued support from the Ankur Asmita Centre, she is now growing into a confident and resilient young girl, ready to embrace new possibilities.
